In April 2016, BABYMETAL entered the American album chart at number 39. They were the first Japanese artist on Billboard magazine's top 40 albums chart in 53 years. The last was Kyo Sakamoto in 1963 with his hit song "Sukiyaki (Ue o Muite Arukou)". BABYMETAL also reached the highest position for a Japanese artist on the UK albums chart.

BABYMETAL formed in 2010. Their music is a fusion of cute idol pop music and heavy metal. This shows in their costumes "the red skirt means cute, and the black means metal," says their lead vocalist Su-Metal. She sings and dances with Yuimetal and Moametal on stage. The three girls perfom in front of the Kami Band. Although their music is cute pop, they are popular among many hard rock fans.

Their popularity spread through clips on Youtube. In 2016 they played London's Wembley Arena in front of 12.500 fans. Playing there was a big dream for them. They call the UK their "second home". Then they played their song "Gimme Chocolate" on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. This is an American TV program that is watched by over 2 million people every night. In just a few years, BABYMETAL has become a major artist in many countries. Their music seems to cross borders. And maybe their fans will learn Japanese.
